Otters Hockey Gives Erie Insurance Arena a Winter Pulse

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League bring major junior hockey — and a championship history — to Erie Insurance Arena all winter.

Otters Hockey Gives Erie Insurance Arena a Winter Pulse (Erie Lakefront News)

When the lake turns cold, Erie's sports calendar moves indoors and across the street. The Erie Otters, one of three American-based teams in the Ontario Hockey League, play at Erie Insurance Arena in downtown Erie, next door to UPMC Park, in front of crowds that treat major junior hockey as the city's winter ritual.

The Otters' history earns the loyalty. The franchise has won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions twice, in 2002 and 2017, and strung together four consecutive 50-win seasons in the mid-2010s — a Canadian Hockey League record — behind a generation of elite young players, most famously Connor McDavid, who arrived in Erie at fifteen under exceptional-player status and left as the first overall pick in the NHL draft.

Major junior hockey is a distinctive product: teenagers and young men playing a fast, physical, high-skill game on their way, in many cases, to professional careers. Erie Insurance Arena, with just over 6,700 hockey seats, puts fans close enough to hear the game as much as see it, and the arena doubles as downtown's concert and events hall through the season.

For Erie, the Otters complete the same year-round symmetry the bayfront promises: SeaWolves in the summer at UPMC Park, Otters in the winter at the arena, and a downtown sports district that never fully goes dark.

The arena district runs both seasons off one parking map: UPMC Park, the Warner Theatre and Erie Insurance Arena stand within a few blocks, administered around the same civic center complex. Erie built its sports downtown before it was fashionable, and the Otters are the winter proof of the concept — a junior team with a pro atmosphere, in a building that has anchored the city's cold months since 1983.
